SOME REFLECTIONS ON ENLISTMENT IN U.S. NAVY

LST 1159 on Mekong Delta
Denn was a Personnelman 2nd Class when he served on the USS Tom Green County (LST 1159) which was one of the ships assigned to supply the Tango and Alpha boats in the Brown Water Navy on the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam.  The time served was in 1969.  The ship took a rocket in the fantail which caused it to need major rebuilding in drydock in Japan for months after the explosion.

The USS Tom Green County made two trips from Danang to Okinawa while Denn was stationed aboard her.  The purpose was to transport personnel being pulled out of Viet Nam after President Nixon's announced the reduction of forces in the war zone.  Both loads of personnel and vehicles were Mash units.
