Warhammer is a fantasy war game that is played on a large table. To play Warhammer you must first purchase an army, paint it and organize it into a regiment ready for battle.
There are many different armies available. They range from the traditional knights in shining armour, The Bretonnians, to a horrible army of skeletons, The Undead. Each army is composed of a range of characters that each have a certain power level. To make sure that the war game is fair, each army has to be composed of characters that total the same for each combatant. Take a look at the full list of available armies here.
The battelfield can be a tabletop, the floor or any area large enough to hold the combantants. Like a real battlefield there are hills to fight over, woods to hide in , rivers which must be crossed and all sorts of features that can be used. The lay of the land becomes part of the stragety of the game. formations of troops try to move round obstacles or hide in cover as the battle rages.
Warhammer is not just a two player game. Two armies
face each other on the battlefield but several players can
control regiments in the same army.
In addition to basic warriors there are models that represent generals, wizards and hereos. they are generally more powerful and are well worth spending the extra time painting them. There is also a huge assortment of monsters and weapons that can be added to your army.
Warhammer is not a simple game and is not usually one that you decide to set up on a rainy day to play for a little while. Some games could go on for many hours - even days!
Warhammer is more than just a game - it is a whole hobby that covers modeling, painting and gaming. Creating your army and scenery can be just as much fun as playing the game. Once you start playing Warhammer with carefullly painted models you'll be hooked.
