Gray's Notes for Virtual Places Newbies (and Others)

Saving Virtual Places Dialog

What and Why:

Any Virtual Places dialog can be saved in a file on your PC.   This is true of "private" talks within IM boxes, as well as chat-room conversations.

It is useful to know how to do this, if only to jog one's memory, and avoid having to write things down longhand.   It is also helpful when it is necessary to file complaints about harassing or other obnoxious activities.

How (Method A):

The window below the room picture is called the Chat Pane:

All the dialog in the Chat Plane, and all that has scrolled off the top but can be read by pushing up the scroll bar, can be saved by Clicking on File at the upper left corner of the VP screen, and then on Save Dialog As... .   See detail at right.   This brings up the usual Windows Save screen, and the text is saved as a .txt type file, readable with Notebook and with most word processors.

Saving IM Box Text:

Normally, the Chat Pane contains the room dialog, so that is what will be saved by the steps we've described.   However, the contents of any IM Box may be moved to the chat pane.   This is done either by clicking the Tab below the Pane that corresponds to that box:

or by clicking on the Make Tab button at the lower left corner of the IM box.   Once the IM dialog has been moved to the chat plane, it may be saved using File and Save Dialog As .

To restore the IM dialog to its box, just double-click on its tab. Or if you want to keep that dialog in the chat pane (perhaps for a quick save), you can put the room chat in a box instead, by double-clicking on the Chat Room tab.

How (Method B):

Another way to save a dialog starts with a right-click on it.   A right-click in the Chat Pane or on an IM text brings up the menu at right.    A click on Save as brings up the Windows Save window.
